Create a Movement with a Signature Song!

It only takes one song to impact a life, and many artists overlook the possibility and opportunities that one song can birth.

To be clear, a Signature Song doesn’t have to be confined to a popular band’s one hit wonder, or song they perform in their encore performance.

I officially started songwriting in my early 30’s, but I didn’t release my first original song into the world until I was 42! 

The song is called “Thieves,” and it was a true labor of love. It started out as a personal anthem of perseverance, but over time I realized this song was much bigger than myself. After sharing it with a close friend who lost her loved one, I discovered this ballad of hope is a universal reminder to silence the lies and negativity that pollute our minds, trust, and believe we will overcome.

“Thieves” resonated because it challenged Ageism across industries, hit upon the Universal theme of depression, fear, self-doubt, and insecurity, and inspired hope and perseverance.

#1: Identify the theme or topic of your song

Perhaps your song is about Mental Health Awareness. Your unique perspective on this topic is worth sharing, so pitch this to your local press outlets in the Month of May and give them something fresh to share during Mental Health Awareness Month.

Try not to force this idea of aligning your Signature Song with a “theme.” Your song should naturally coincide with a topic, but please ensure you’re ready to share in a deeper way. In other words, it’s ok if a song documents your struggles, but if you’re not mentally or emotionally healed from the trauma or experience, it will be hard to empower others as they are overcoming their challenges.

#2: Master your Pitch Strategy

NEWSFLASH! You don’t have to be a Publicist to get press!

Oftentimes, you just need the right pitch strategy. You can start with relationships you’ve already established and ask for referrals. For example, who do you know that has a blog or podcast?

For those cold reach outs, ALWAYS personalize your communication and create a connection that inspires the media outlet to learn more. A Strong “Hook” and email subject line is what will get them to OPEN your email and that’s the first hurdle you want to overcome.

Always be mindful of what is in it for THEM. How can you add value to their audience?

Tip #3: Combine Your Music + Message AT LIVE Group Events

Taking your Signature Song to groups in a live setting is another way to leverage your music release in a creative way. Aligning with groups that hit on the same topic of your song can facilitate opportunities to spark conversation and share your message in a meaningful way. You may not fancy yourself to be a Speaker, but there are many ways you can share your message and music to groups of all sizes who resonate with your experience.
