Where Do I Start if I wanna go on a Reality Singing Show?

There are countless reality singing show opportunities out there and multiple avenues to explore them, but often, information overload leads to analysis paralysis.

“Where do I start and how do I get my foot in the door when there are hundreds of thousands of singers all vying for a chance to shine on national television?”

I get this question a lot and I have a few thoughts on how you can get started the “right” way, so you can position yourself for the best shot at success.

Let’s quickly address what a reality singing show is and is NOT.

It is NOT :

  • Your overnight path to career success

  • Your “get rich quick” end all, be all plan

  • Your one & only music opportunity that will make or break your career

It IS:

  • An opportunity to expand your music impact

  • An extension of your music marketing efforts

  • A great place to network and create lifetime music connections

Where Do I Start? ... if I wanna go on a Reality Singing Show?

I break this process down into Three Steps:

Step One: Ask, “Where” to Start and Begin Research

Research takes effort and work and I highly encourage you to simply do the work.

Discover what shows are the right fit for you. Make note of the requirements, including age, citizenship, and even go as far as checking out their rules on artists who are under contract.

As I was preparing for the Hollywood rounds on American Idol, I had to provide signed paperwork from my Los Angeles agency, releasing me from any contractual obligations as a voice-over artist. Ultimately, keep in mind that reality singing shows need to cover themselves and ensure there are no conflicts of interest between the contestants and the show.

As you continue your research, find out when & how they cast through their websites and sign up for updates or join their mailing lists.

At any given point, reality shows are casting, so be on the lookout for the opportunity to register for the first phase of the audition process. Keep in mind, that Instagram and Facebook are often great places to find out about auditions as well, so be sure to follow your favorite show on social media as well.

Lastly, research local opportunities taking place that you can take advantage of.  The more performance opportunities you can get under your belt, the better.

Step Two: Define Your Why & Get Clear On Your Intention.

Get Emotional. See It. Visualize & Feel It.

Now that you have a clear idea of the show you’re going after, when they’re casting, and how to sign up, it’s important to go inward for a moment to define your WHY.

Having a very clear vision of what you want and why you want it, is the most foundational step you can take to realize the life you want.

Your “Why” must be compelling and emotional, the kind of stuff that will keep you in the “game” when the going gets tough, or when rejection is kicking you in the gut for the umpteenth time.

Attaching real emotion to your WHY as you feel deep in your bones how amazing you’ll feel once you’ve realized your goals and dreams, will lead to your development of grit and perseverance.

The entertainment industry is a long game and although success looks different to everyone, those with a commitment to not quitting are the ones who come out on top.

Having a strong connection to your WHY will fuel your hunger to bring your best, and that energy will translate to casting producers.

Step Three: Tap Into The Power of Mindset

Inside the Reality Singing Show Success Academy, I have an entire module dedicated to Mindset, because that’s how paramount it truly is.

Many people underestimate the power of the mind- but any artist, entrepreneur, or business owner will tell you, Mindset is EVERYTHING.

A negative or insecure mindset leads to a lack of confidence. Lack of confidence leads to a block in creativity & innovation. Without those things, we are stuck in the muck.

Mastering your audition mindset begins with your beliefs.

Ask yourself these questions:

What do you believe about yourself when it comes to your singing?

What do you believe about your chances of getting cast on a show?

What do you believe about others in the casting process?

What positive habits can you incorporate into your world CONSISTENTLY to promote a healthy mindset?
