Creating Music Career Opportunities Through a Signature Song

What is a Signature Song and How Do I Create Music Career Opportunities Using One?

Let’s dive into how you can create music career opportunities through a Signature Song!

Have you ever allowed limiting beliefs or fear to hold you back from doing something you were born for?

!Confession Alert!

Although I consider singing my craft and have more journals than I can count full of lyrics and poetry, I allowed my insecurity of not playing an instrument to keep me from writing original music for over 30 years!

As a Singer, do you struggle with believing you’re a Songwriter?

If you’re stuck in the mindset that because you don’t play piano or guitar, you’ll never be a songwriter, I’ve got good news:

You have a message, entirely unique to your experience that others can be encouraged by, and you can MAXIMIZE THE REACH OF this song AS YOU spark important conversations, inspire hope, and create new music opportunities.

I officially started songwriting in my early 30’s, but I didn’t release my first original song into the world until I was 42!

The song is called “Thieves,” and it was a true labor of love. It started out as a personal anthem of perseverance, but over time I realized this song was much bigger than myself. After sharing it with a close friend who lost her loved one, I discovered this ballad of hope is a universal reminder to silence the lies and negativity that pollute our minds, trust, and believe we will overcome.

“Thieves” also touched on my insecurities that I may never find my “place” inside the music industry and even my fear of what people might think of me releasing my first original at the ripe age of 42.

But what came out of this release was so beautiful… so much love and support, but also a tremendous amount of reach out from women who felt so connected to my song.

Congratulations. I’ve just bought your song and I’m in love!!! It spoke to me on the depest level and brought me close to tears  💖
I wish you to reach all the places you want with this amazing song  🎵

Overcoming the fear, imposter syndrome, and anxiety was all worth it because I knew my song was impacting and connecting in a real way and I learned that you can create many “out of the box” music opportunities through what I refer to as “Your Signature Song.

You might think that a Signature Song has to come from a well-established or popular musician or band, but I look at it entirely different. I view your Signature Song as “THE” song that captures the full essence of your human experience and shines a spotlight on your artist journey.

This type of song could be indicative of a chapter of your life, or a time and phase that you’ve lived and breathed. Ultimately, it connects listeners to a message or cause near and dear to your heart, because you’ve lived it.

Signature songs share your passion, not only for music but for life in a real and authentic way and connect beyond the surface. They act as a bridge between you the person and you the Artist and help you to create powerful connections with music supporters, who become lifelong fans.

Lastly, a Signature Song can open doors to new music opportunities that will expand your audience and listenership.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN A REALITY SINGING SHOW?

This Quiz is For You If…

✔ You Love To Sing and Dream of a Career in Music, but don’t know where to start.

✔ You’re Committed To Creating a Career as an Indie Musician, and are ready to find creative ways to expand your music impact.

✔ You’re a Singer at your core, but life got in the way and you’re ready to reconnect to your music dream!

Here are 3 Ways To Leverage a Signature Song to Create Music Career Opportunities:

#1: Go LOCAL BY PITCHING LOCAL PRESS

When you align your topic with something newsworthy, you provide a story that others can relate to and journalists are always looking for a good story!

Perhaps your song is about Mental Health Awareness. Your unique perspective on this topic is worth sharing, so pitch this to your local press outlets in the Month of May and give them something fresh to share during Mental Health Awareness Month.

Openly sharing my age while releasing my first original song was really important to me, because I feel like a lot of people, especially women hold back from chasing their dreams because they think they’ve “missed their shot.” I think dreams are worth pursuing at every age and stage and the Dallas Observer agreed!

#2: GO WORLDWIDE AND PITCH PODCASTS

Newsflash! When releasing music, you don’t have to ONLY pitch Music podcasts. Think about all of the people in the world who are dying to discover a new tune. Many of them also listen to podcasts, take the time to do little research, and find a few that make sense for the message of your song.

Oftentimes, a podcast host will welcome having a musician on their podcast, because it’s a departure from the normal guest and adds variety to their show. In turn, you introduce your music to a new set of ears and create an opportunity to connect with future music supporters.

Here’s an example of a podcast I booked where I got to sing my song LIVE, followed by an interview to discuss the message behind it. The Podcast is Called: Journey of A Song with Emmeline.

Tip #3: Think “One to Many” with LIVE Group Events

Taking your Signature Song to groups in a live setting is another way to leverage your music release in a creative way. Aligning with groups that hit on the same topic of your song can facilitate opportunities to spark conversation and share your message in a meaningful way. You may not fancy yourself to be a Speaker, but there are many ways you can share your message and music to groups of all sizes who resonate with your experience.

“Thieves” has opened up Speaking opportunities for me at Music Conferences and Women in Business Events that are both in-person and virtual. As Artists and Musicians, we have something unique and different to contribute to events like these by incorporating our music into the speaking experience.

For several of these opportunities, I will not only speak on the topic of the song and how it can apply to the audience, but I’ll share a live performance of my Signature Song as well.

Music has a powerful way of connecting and making people feel, and when you can make someone feel, you become memorable! Your song and your message in turn, impact on a cellular level.

Through my Signature Song, I went from not believing I was a true Songwriter, to serving on a Songwriting Panel at the very reputable Launch Music Conference. Talk about a one-eighty!

So to recap on 3 WAYS To Leverage a Signature Song to Create Music Career Opportunities:

  1. Go Local and Pitch Local Press

  2. Go Worldwide and Pitch Podcasts

  3. Think “One to Many” With Live Group Events
