Vocal Tips For A Reality Singing Show Competition

Is Your Voice Ready for a Reality Singing Show Competition?

Reality singing show competitions are currently casting, which means your virtual open call could be right around the corner but are you ready?

More specifically, is your voice ready to sustain a competition like The Voice, American Idol or America’s Got Talent?

It’s one thing to feel vocally prepared for a 90-second audition, but should you be asked to do more, sing more, or hallelujah, progress to the next round, will your voice have the stamina to sustain the pressures of the reality singing show competition?

Think about the long game (as in, beyond those initial 90-seconds) when you’re auditioning because the process moves very quickly, and if you’re fortunate enough to move forward, you don’t want to blow your opportunity because you’re not vocally prepared to sustain the demands.

Here are three things to put in place BEFORE your reality singing show experience, so you can achieve confidence through optimum vocal health:

#1: Hire a Vocal Coach

Please don’t make the mistake of thinking you don’t need a coach. Even coaches need coaches and if you look at the best athletes in the world, the top business owners, etc… they all have coaches. This is a huge opportunity and you and your success are worth the investment!

Yes, you have time. Yes, you can find a way to “afford” it, and yes! You Can find The right coach!

Having a coach builds confidence and confidence is everything! Here are a few questions you can ask when researching a new vocal coach:

1. Is this coach equipped to help me achieve my goals?

There are many vocal coaches out there who have key specialties or areas of focus… what areas of focus will support you in your vocal goals?

2. Do I like this coach's personality?

Hear me out if you think this is superficial… if their personality rubs you the wrong way or doesn’t jive with yours… it may become distracting or make it hard to learn from them. Down the road, you may also loathe your lessons, because you don’t want to spend your time with your vocal coach.

3. Can I afford this vocal coach?

Research your vocal coach’s fees prior to committing to ensure you’re able to fit lessons in your budget. Services & fee structures vary amongst every coach and communicating expectations upfront is always a win-win.

This Quiz is For You If…

✔ You’re Committed To Creating a Career as an Indie Musician, and are ready to find creative ways to expand your music impact.

✔ You’re a Singer at your core, but life got in the way and you’re ready to reconnect to your music dream!

#2: Train

Attending a vocal lesson with a coach, and training your vocals are two different things. Go the extra mile to take what you’ve learned and put it into practice. Your vocal muscles need training in order to grow, strengthen and evolve.

Consult with your vocal coach to put a daily vocal exercise routine in place or create one of your own. This will not only strengthen your stamina, but it will protect you from injury and give you the confidence you need to go for the high notes and take risks inside the competition.

Casting producers and judges are not looking for you to play it safe. They are looking to be delighted and surprised. One way to deliver that is through rock-solid vocal confidence.

Tip #3: Have A Vocal Care Routine

Your vocal health is critical to your success on a reality singing show, so it’s important you prioritize it. Here are a few tips to keep your precious chords prepared for competition:

  1. Stay Hydrated
Steam, coupled with drinking water. When steaming, take a deep breath in through your mouth and exhale through your nose.

  2. Daily Exercise Routine to Strengthen Your Stamina

  3. Warm-Ups Before Your Sing!
Take your time and stay in tune with what your body needs.

  4. Adequate Sleep:
Take advantage of your sleep opportunities anytime you can get it! Rest When You Need To Rest To Avoid Strain

  5. Watch Your Diet
The food you intake can impact how your voice responds.

Ever notice how sometimes it’s hard to clear your throat after eating certain foods? Or perhaps you’re experiencing serious heartburn? Mucus and acid reflux are two things to be aware of when we are choosing your pre-performance meal.  Avoid these foods before your next vocal performance opportunity: cheese, butter, yogurt, milk, chocolate, spicy foods, fried foods, sodas, caffeine, tomatoes.

Do you have a vocal care kit?

Perhaps it’s time to create one. Here are a few things I have in mine:

  • A humidifier to combat dry air

  • Lozenges (My fave: Grether’s Pastilles Original Formula)

  • Mouth Kote Oral Moisturizer Spray

  • Hot Tea: Throat Coat or your tea of choice (avoid caffeine)
