Three Keys To Master Your Performance Connection on Stage

What separates a good performance from a stellar one?

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just getting started, stage presence is imperative if you want to make an impact.  Here are my top tips to deliver an unforgettable performance that will leave your audience wanting more!

Three Keys To Master Your Performance Connection on Stage

KEY #1: Rehearse

You Perform Like You Practice, which means training and repetition are critical to your confidence on stage. When you commit to a disciplined rehearsal work ethic, you elevate your craft, which leads to a greater connection with your fans.

Through rehearsal, you’ll improve on your ability to execute each lyric, note, and movement with precision on a consistent basis. You’ll also have more fun and get out of your head because rehearsal breeds confidence.

The Antithesis of Rehearsing is “Winging It,” and I urge you to not drink this kool-aid. There’s a myth amongst singers and musicians, that rehearsal takes away the flavor or spontaneity from a performance. The truth is, when you’re prepared, you show up more relaxed, focussed, and ready to bring that X-Factor that brings an audience to their feet!

Plan your connection points, stage banter, and standout “moments” in advance, so you can captivate and ignite your growing fan base.

Key #2: Make Them Feel

Being a good singer is not enough. Stage presence, charisma, and magnetic energy are what transform a song into a full-blown experience. Emotion holds all of this together.

To master your performance connection on stage, you must first possess a personal connection with the material you’re performing.

In other words, you must go far beyond just singing pretty notes.

I believe this is the difference between good singers and great singers. Great singers and performers understand the art of storytelling. When you demonstrate creativity in a raw and authentic fashion, you open the doors of communication and connection.

Inside my book Performing Artist Pathway, I share a technique I use when coaching my clients for a performance called the Emotion to Real Life Inventory.

To conduct an Emotion to Real Life Inventory, identify the emotions found in the song and create personal mini-stories that attach yourself to each emotion. This helps create a tangible connection to the material being performed that the audience will feel.

Relating to and then communicating a great story allows you to make it believable, so whether you wrote the song or not, using this technique will enable you to perform it as if it’s all yours.

KEY #3: Leverage Your Mind, Body & Soul

Now that you’ve taken the time to create a personal connection to the music you’re performing, the next step is to share it! Allow the audience and your fans to see who you are, understand your process, and feel how the music moves you.

Whether you have one, five, or thousands of people coming to see you, it’s time to give them a show and make your music impact!

Share your story, your music, and the lyrics by opening your eyes and letting them see your heart. By breaking the fourth wall, you give your audience the opportunity to build an authentic connection. Don’t strip away that access by getting so caught up in your own world that you forget to connect.

“One of your important roles as a performer is to stir people’s hearts in a way that makes them feel alive. Whether they’re crying, laughing, dancing, or experiencing a sense of peace, you have the great privilege of facilitating authentic emotion.

— Brianna Ruelas, Performing Artist Pathway

Identify what you can do to help you feel grounded and at home on stage. This level of confidence will enable you to pull your energy up from the bottom to the top as your music and message soar from your full body.

Eye contact is crucial during your song delivery because it not only communicates confidence, but it unveils the deep connection you have to the music. If you close your eyes the entire song, it blocks that connection and diminishes the impact of the emotion you are trying to convey.

Your ability to connect and deliver the emotion of the song in a compelling way is what inspires the audience to feel the intensity, so whether all eyes are on you, or closed and “in the moment,” they will still hear the fire in your voice and feel it through your energy on stage.

If you’re in your head and nerves are taking over, remember that you have prepared for this moment. You have arrived and this your opportunity to slay the stage, but in order for you to perform at your top, you must not only believe it’s possible but you must command your focus from the nerves to a feeling of power.

This can be achieved through a physical response that tells your body, “I’m here to rock my audition and I’m doing it now!”

Your body, mind, and soul are all connected to your ability to deliver an unforgettable performance and it’s up to you to leverage them together.
